John Hauxwell’s Discussion Groups: Pheromones

Virtually every aspect of the colony is dictated by pheromones (smells). Queens, workers, drones and brood are all smelly in their own way. If the smell disappears, we will discuss what happens in the colony, what to look out for and what to do.

John is one of NLBs most experienced and knowledgeable beekeepers. A great opportunity for members to learn and discuss aspects of beekeeping in an informal setting.

These discussion groups are for NLB Members who have some experience of keeping bees.

John Hauxwell’s Discussion Group: Laying Workers/Drone Laying Queens

Workers can start laying if the colony swarms and the new queen fails to be mated or is lost. As a result, no emergency queen can be created. We will discuss the circumstances and what can be done. Queens may run out of sperm and therefore lay unfertilised eggs, hence drones. Why and what to do?
